Power Up Ukraine is a non-profit association founded from the beginning by the "Vasa Church" in Kalmar, which in turn is affiliated with the Evangelical Fatherland Foundation (EFS) which is part of the Church of Sweden.
The commitment to Ukraine started with individuals in and around the association asking for support with premises and administration for fundraisers and aid shipments, something the association has a long tradition of. The Board then raised thoughts on how the association could, in addition to this, contribute to the cause of Ukraine in the best way. After following the development of the war, it became clear that the country is without large parts of its infrastructure for the production and distribution of electric power, out of this the project “Power up Ukraine” was born.
The project team consists largely of happy amateurs who work hard and learn new things, but are led by professionals including engineers, drivers, electricians and administrators. Some are members of the Vasa Church, others have been linked to the project to fill skills gaps, but common to all is the non-profit work and commitment to war-torn Ukraine.
The purpose of the project is to purchase and ship backup power solutions to Ukraine with the funds raised. In order to deliver the materials to the Ukrainian state in a legally and financially secure manner, Power Up Ukraine cooperates with Filippus Human Aid, a Swedish NGO with many years of involvement in Ukraine.
Power Up Ukraine became legally in 2024 a very own non-profit association, our origin and connection with Vasa Church in Kalmar is nevertheless something we are proud of and a natural part of how we were founded.

Without electricity, vital equipment stops. We prioritise deliveries to hospitals and mobile clinics to save lives.
The Ukrainian winters are merciless. Our generators power heating systems that keep families warm when the grid is down, which is frequent and extensive.
Light in the dark is more than just lighting. It is safety for children in shelters and a prerequisite for communication.
We work directly with trusted and significant contacts on the ground to know exactly where the needs are greatest right now.
We collect what is requested through donations or purchases. The quality and condition of what we collect often varies, which means many hours in the workshop to complete the shipments for transport. These collections may also include the transport vehicles themselves.
When we have enough equipment, vehicles and volunteers ready, we travel together towards our destinations. Once on the border with Ukraine, we often receive additional information about the current situation, which allows us to return to Sweden and immediately start preparing again for the next trip.
